Falling Ill in Singapore
二月 4, 2008 由 shirls 雪芬
It is not pouring outside (yet), but I am in the internet room in the hotel, waiting again.
I have to wait for 3 hours or so until the departure time of our bus back to Kuala Lumpur (KL).
Ed is out shopping while I can only rest in the hotel because I have fallen ill ! I have diarrhoea, stomachache, and feeling weak with no appetite. We could not pin-point what went wrong, possibly due to food poisoning or virus. Frankly, I do not get it because I have been eating street foods in Malaysia (supposedly a dirtier country than Singapore) without any problem. Well, I guess it is just bad luck.
In addition to that, I also suffered from some sorts of skin allergy. At first, we thought they were mosquito bites but now I have more than 30 to 40 very itchy small raised red dots across back of my neck and on my right arm. So, it is unlikely to be mosquito bites but possible allergy to either bedlinen or street food I ate. Well, bad luck again.
I think this is bad luck because I had traveled to many more remote places or countries but seldom experienced any troubles excerpt once in China and once in Tibet. Similar problems : skin allergy caused by bedlinen and diarrhoea caused by Tibetan butter tea. However, I would not expect to have the same problems in the clean Singapore.
I am glad this is our last day in Singapore and we are heading back to KL. I just want to get better soon before Chinese New Year.
As for my travel experiences in Singapore, apart from the above problems and the daily rains, we enjoyed Singapore. I will write more and upload some photos when I return home.

err…..your skin allergy could be due to strong detergent they used for washing. overdose of some chemical in detergent will normally coz allergy to sensitive ppl.
oh no … pls get well soon!
… but work’s been pretty bz so i’m quite worn out dy … maybe i’ll snooze for most of CNY … haha…
Lots of rests and lots of love from Ed should speed up recovery!
I’ve been very careful with my diet lately as i wanna make sure i’m fit for all the long distance travel and unhealthy food during CNY
still, waking up to good food is sth to look forward to …
Take good care and hv a safe journey back!
hey, wish u speedy recovery!! there are a lot to enjoy still, pls take care.
Scary illness. I hate diarrhoea. Got one recently (from Jakarta). Felt soooo weak.
Hope you get well soon.
Any tips from Chinese Medicine perspective on diarrhoea? Shall just let the nature takes it course and let the ‘thing’ go when it needs to? This way will get rid of the ‘poison’ but make us very weak.
Or take some medicine and stop the discharge? (But the ‘poison’ stay?)
Oh !! Thanks for everyone’s concern.
I discussed it with my dad. We think the most possible causes are the clams in Katong Laksa in Singapore !!! I was stupid enough to eat on the street during rainy days !! The clams were highly likely already contaminated due to the damp weather.
I have not got better yet and have more dots !!! Unfortunately, the heat and the dampness don’t help
I just want to get well before Chinese New Year. Well, I think there are still many dishes I can’t eat
慧沁,
I first thought that too but when I think of it more, I think food-poisoning is more likely. Hee hee…..太贪吃了!
Chnglan,
You are a wise woman !! Umm…..poor me that now can’t eat the delicious Malaysian food with Ed. That was what we were waiting for - 在马大吃 !
Mei yen,
Thanks.
Yinyoon,
FYI - we normally don’t intend to stop diarrhoea due to food-poinsoning. You are right, diarrhoea is to get rid of the ‘poisons’ in the body, we we will get better soon. If we feel week, we have to take lots of fluids to prevent dehydration. The best is to get the special made fluids from pharmacy.
In Chinese medicine, we treat it the similar way. Importantly, we also have to follow a strict diet. There are many food we can’t take, like seafood, eggs, dairy etc.
Hope the above help
Thanks for the tips!
Hi Shirls,
Hi Ciying,
很高兴收到你的留言。
嘻嘻!都怪自己贪吃,吃出病来
其实,蛮喜欢新加坡的。
嗯,或许我们曾在新加坡擦身而过….
