Halloween at Elora

Halloween at Elora

Two weekends ago on a drive to see autumn leaves colours, Ed and I went to a small artsy village town just outside of Toronto called Elora.

The most interesting thing about the villatge were the decorations they did for Halloween, by far the most elobrate and createive I’ve seen.  The town organised an artist(or a group of artists) to build goulish scuptures out of metal wire and cotton gauze.  The above photos were taken in the front of the Elora tourist center but the village had set up scupltures all over the main street and shops.

Tomorrow night is Halloween (All Hallows’ Even) so enjoy the celebration of ghosts and goblins and have fun !!!

Pride Parade 08

Pride Parade 08

Toronto Urban Beach

urban beach

During my leisurely walk along the waterfront, I was surprised to see a ‘beach’.

It is literally like a giant long sandbox along the water edge that is filled with sands and many tall yellow umbrellas.

I then realised it is a new waterfront public space project that was opened June 2007.

Well, it looks a little strange and awkward that a ‘beach’ that has no swimming and no waves. However, the good news is, you do have lots of sands, plus a lake view, with the umbrellas and chairs.

As you can see, many people enjoy lying on the sands for a sunbath , or bringing their children for some sand games, or just simply walk along the ‘beach’ and enjoy the refreshing lake breezes. So, what’s the real difference and why not?

And, it is equally a beautiful, lazy and leisurely summer afternoon.

I was ‘fortunate’ enough to have the chance to experience the worst snowstorm in nearly ten years in Toronto.

The snow was pouring non-stop yesterday.

Ed and I went out during the storm, well, for an experience. It was rare chance.

The streets were covered by 20 to 30 cm of snow and was extremely difficult to walk.

We only walked around our apartment but I was already quite exhausted.

This morning, though still snowing, only lightly.

Sun is out, people are out too. Me too, taking my camera for some photos.

Temporarily ignoring the need to clean up the mess, people want to first enjoy the sunshine-filled beautiful snowwhite city ….

Daniel !

It was rare to catch up with a friend, let alone someone from Australia. We met up in Montreal. It was very wet and dark while we were there. I knew I was not capable of take any good photos in such conditions. In addition, my friend, Daniel is a keen photographer and I knew I feel embarrassed to take photos in front of an “expert” 😉

When I returned to Toronto, I regretted that decision. No matter how poor the quality would be, I should have  a photo of Montreal in late autumn/early winter. I asked Daniel to send me one of his photos. The photo is so quite well taken and rather beautiful (see above)! Thank you Dan!

P.S. It was already snowing when the picture was taken.

This is the cottage.

There is a boathouse built near the cottage.
Two stories – ground floor for storing the boat,
the upper story has a few bunk beds and
simple furnitures for guests or children.
The balcony upstairs has beautiful lake view.

Siting there, I was thinking nothing.

Julian

Julian is very good at fishing !

We were out in the boat !

Generally speaking, cottage is a small house in a country, usually built near the water or mountains. Of course, there are super rich people like to build exaggeratingly large cottage. Good local council usually rejects such proposal of design, to avoid disturbing the natural environment and local people’s simple lives.

Anyway, Ed’s friend’s parents bought this piece of lakeside land with very low price over 30 or 40 years ago. They have put lots of effort building and maintaining this little comfortable cottage. The parents now are retired here. Their children and grandchildren love coming over the weekends to spend some times with them, as well as the nature. Thankfully, there aren’t too many ‘showing off’ huge cottages here, the environment is still intact.

Ed’s friends invited us over for a weekend while the parents were away. Spending a weekend here, I finally understand what is cottage life. Surrounding by the nature, we were extremely relaxed. We read, we sat by the lakeside, we went into the boat ventured out to the lake, we went for a walk in the nearby small forest, the little kid like fishing and swimming. If the weather was clear, we could have set up a fire outdoor and chit chatting around it. Unfortunately, it was not the case, we ended up watching pirated copy of Sicko. It was pretty good too.

It was a very relaxing weekend away.

Indian gay men dressed up in sari in Pride Parade in Toronto.

The above two photos were from my boyfriend from Toronto again.

They were taken during the Pride Parade in Downtown Toronto. Pride March is a special annual event organised by gay and lesbian communities in Toronto. Although it is not as international famous as the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade, it was big enough to attract more than 100 thousands people to Downtown Toronto.

Well, I was not there but studying hard in Melbourne. I could, however, see the fun and pride in this Pride Parade 🙂

The photo was taken by my boyfriend in Toronto last evening.

Though I missed the sunset, it definitely brightens up my spirit to study for the two upcoming big, fat exams on next Monday 🙂

Yarra River.

Federation Square (Fed Sq) is one of my favourite spots in Melbourne. It was built less than 10 years ago. It is the public space and a unique cultural, art and tourism precinct for Melbourne city. It is located opposite of Flinders St Station. St Paul’s Cathedral is on its right and Yarra River on its left.

Fed Sq建筑内有 : National Gallery of Victoria, Australia Centre for the Moving Image, Australia Design Centre, BMW Edge 圆形剧场等等。

Initially, I did not like its design. For me, it was too awkward but now I start to appreciate the unique spacious and colourful simulations it provides. The are many important buildings within Fed Sq, including National Gallery of Victoria, Australia Centre for the Moving Image, Australia Design Centre, BMW Edge Amphitheatre etc. However, what attract me the most are the ongoing creative and cultural events and activities organised in the Fed Sq.

On the day I wrote Me!!!bourne, I walked past Fed Sq and saw many people sitting in The Square. I thought they were just enjoying the sunshine. Only later I found out that there were some free performances as part of the Melbourne Jazz Festival. Looking at the traditional Indonesian musical instruments on stage, puzzled, I sat down to find out how do these instruments relate to Jazz music.

It was a performances by a group of music students at the Victoria College of Arts. They first performed some traditional Indonesian musics with the instruments, then slowly add in modern jazz components to the traditional musics. It was quite interesting. Attracted by the creative combinations of musics, more people sat down to enjoy the musics.

There are also more upcoming events in the Fed Sq, including the children film festival and Cuban/Rio-Brazil/Eastern European Musical concert (organised by PBS station). I guess, my times in Melbourne are going to be quite exciting ! 😉

I supposed to spend all day in the library to study but I chose the wrong library – the RMIT library in the city. The reason I wanted to study in the city because I had a few things needed to be organised in the city.

However, the weather was so gorgeous that as soon as I walked out from the library I had already decided to stay out for the sun, in the lovely Melbourne City 🙂

St Paul’s Cathedral in the Melbourne City. I found out today that it was recently renovated while I was away, no wonder it looks so stunning this time around !

View at South Bank and Yarra River (the river which flows through the city). One of my favourite spots during summer.

Flinders Street Station is among Melbourne’s most recognisable landmarks. It is one of the best-known railway stations in Australia. It has more than 90 years history.

When I first arrived in Melbourne, it was the only few buildings I knew and I always met friends at the steps before we went anywhere.

Wang Tai Sin Temple is a famous temple in Hong Kong, it is famous for its god to grant whatever is requested. Ten years ago, during my first visit to Hong Kong, I came here – saw hundreds of people praying sincerely and could feel their earnest plea to the god.

It is also famous for its fortune telling. The worshippers light worship sticks, kneel before the main altar, make a wish, and shake a bamboo cylinder containing fortune sticks until one falls out. The stick is exchanged for a piece of paper bearing the same number, and the soothsayer then interprets the fortune on the paper for the worshipper. Friends teased me if I wanted to ask for my fortune, I smiled and said no.

The temple was quieter this time. Probably because Hong Kong economic has finally improved over the last year, people have more stable life and find fewer reasons to visit here. Or simply because I came at the wrong time and the crowd had not arrived yet.

Whatever the reason, I enjoyed the quietness and had stayed there for more than half an hour. The old lady in the photo was there praying, shaking the cylinder containing fortune sticks over and over again for the same amount of time. I stood quietly in a corner, while taking many photos of hers, I was wondering what bothering her and what were her wishes. For her age, I guess probably nothing could bother her anymore except worrying of her children or grandchildren.

I was touched by her sincerity and concerned by her distressing look, I found myself praying – praying for her health and happiness, praying for her children or grandchildren to be able to overcome all obstacles in life, hence able to look after her well and to provide her with a better life….
